  5.     The No. 2 reactor at Kansai Electric Power Co.'s Mihama
  6. nuclear power plant, located 220 miles west of Tokyo, was
  7. operating at full capacity when an alarm sounded. Radiation
  8. levels in one steam generator soared to 1,250 times the normal
  9. level, triggering the emergency cooling system. Within seconds,
  10. tons of cold water began pouring in, averting a meltdown of the
  11. reactor core. But company officials acknowledged that
  12. malfunctioning safety valves had allowed a "small amount" of
  13. radiation to escape.

  15.     Containing the political fallout from Japan's worst nuclear
  16. accident may prove more difficult. The mishap at the
  17. 19-year-old facility underscored growing fears around the globe
  18. about the mechanical wear and tear that occurs inside nuclear
  19. plants as they age. Such concerns could hobble the government
  20. in its drive to double the number of nuclear reactors to 80
  21. during the next 20 years, in order to reduce Japan's dependence
  22. on imported fossil fuels.
